Out of all the features and little accessories that make your bathroom or shower function normally there is one that is unfortunately overlooked unintentionally because it is usually out of sight most of the time – the shower door sweep. It is located on the bottom of your glass or plastic bath door and is a rubber strip that is designed to stop leaks from coming out of your bathing area. Now if you are finding that your floor right outside of your bath door is wet after you are done taking a bath or shower, then your shower door sweep is not working correctly and should be replaced.

A wet floor from a leaky shower door sweep cause more than safety dangers

Now it is not only a potential danger for the wet floor to cause accidental slippage for young children or those shower door sweepwith mobility disorders, but you should also realize the importance that it also goes one step beyond being potentially injured or hurt. You see, the shower door seep needs to function correctly because the wet flooring could cause water damage to that area and then you would have to worry about the headache and cost of repairing it in the future. As with most problems, the best time to deal with them is by preventing them in the first place so what you want to do is make sure that if your shower door sweep is not working, then you should get a new one as soon as possible. It will save you money in the long run and you will also find it less time consuming to wipe it up with a towel each time you decide to take a bath.

Replacing a shower door sweep can be done easily

In fact, it is quite easy to do it yourself without having to own any type of complicated tools. These tools that are necessary are probably already in your toolbox or kitchen drawer. Here’s how to change that shower door sweep:

First, you are want to open the bathtub door from inside out and find something to prop it open. This will make changing the shower door sweep much easier.

Second, check to see if your shower door sweep is held in place by screws. If so, use a screw driver to unscrew the unit. If the strip is not screwed in place then you want to start to pull very carefully towards the outside of the bathtub door until it loosens and slides out. Remember, to use very gentle pulling motions to get it loose, do not jerk it suddenly.

Now that you have the worn shower door sweep out you should measure it and get it’s dimensions by height and length. By doing this you now have the dimensions to begin your search for a new one.

When you get your new strip, take your old door sweep and lay your new one over it and cut it out to the same shape and pattern as the old sweep.

If you had to pull your strip out out the shower door sweep, then using a light coating of vaseline to lube it up and make it slide in easier. If you had to unscrew your sweep, secure the new one and screw it back into place.

You could hop in the shower for a quick cleaning and after you are done, inspect the area of your floor that was constantly wet. If you find that water is still leaking out onto your floor then you should consider using bathroom caulking in the door areas near the floor to stop any further leakage. Fixing a shower door sweep is quick and easy in many cases.
